Alongside William Faulkner and John Updike, Booth Tarkington is one of just three authors to win the Pulitzer Prize more than once. Tarkington accomplished the feat with Alice Adams and The Magnificent Ambersons, dramas that explored the lives of fictional characters who live in a setting similar to the one Tarkington experienced in Indianapolis. Tarkington continues to garner praise for his works' historical realism.

This was the best seller in 1916. The book is centered around a 17 year old boy's summer and his infatuation with a girl from out of town. The most interesting aspect is that this story could have been set in 2018! I expect that this was a best seller because of the humor. I think that we are living in a society that is saturated with humor and consequently the book's humorous on-goings aren't as outrageous today as they would have been in 1916. Easy, fun read, not memorable.

Seventeen Booth Tarkington 9781522754718 Books Reviews

The print in this edition is very very small. It is extremely difficult to read.
My kids and I enjoyed reading this book together because my oldest has recently become quite enamored with a young lady at church ;) The only thing that I didn't like about it was that there were a few parts that were racial inappropriate. However, I realize that this is because this book was written so long ago, and since was reading it aloud to my children, I simply left out any parts that might be derogatory to African Americans.
I had read this book 60+ years ago, and wondered how I would find it now, and whether I could recommend it for my 17-year old granddaughter. How did it age? Answer Very badly indeed! Stupid boy, airhead girl, stereotypical black handyman.......Also, this is a terrible edition, full of glaring errors. Avoid!!
This was a funny parody of the tumult in a teenager's life. As an adult, it gives you a quick reminder at how silly and ridiculously serious teenagers are when it comes to situations they consider to be "life or death." There are some gender and racial biases from the early 20th century present in the book, but they don't detract from the story or the wit the author offers.
Print is font 8 or 9, I prefer 12 so am returning this and getting a version where I can control thefonts.
We haven't changed much in 100 years. William is a hopeless teenager, in love with a dippy (but everybody adores her) girl. Hormones rule. But none of that stuff is allowed in 1916. It's funny. Booth Tarkington is such a good writer — he gets the material, and can make a little fun of his youthful protagonists without totally slaying them. (I lie. It's a hilarious takedown of teenage drama.) Loved it.
A truly wonderful and entertaining story. The plot concerns the trials and tribulations of 17 year old William Baxter and his attempts to befriend a new girl in town (Lola Pratt). The story has much humor and the book is a masterpiece of writing as the author contributes many insightful and ironic comments. Be aware, though, that if you dislike old time video such as "Ozzie and Harriet", you might not like this either.
